چکیده

A necessary and sufficient condit ion is presented for the normalized asymptotic rth power distortion of a mismatched multidimensional quantizer to converge to a certtin opt imum constant known as Bennett’s integral. The dimensionality of our results is al lowed to approach infinity in order to make some universal source coding compar isons to quantization theory.

Sample-adaptive product quantization: asymptotic analysis and examples

Vector quantization (VQ) is an efficient data compression technique for low bit rate applications. However, the major disadvantage of VQ is that its encoding complexity increases dramatically with bit rate and vector dimension. Even though one can use a modified VQ, such as the tree-structured VQ, to reduce the encoding complexity, it is practically infeasible to implement such a VQ at a high b...

Asymptotic Performance of Vector Quantizers with a Perceptual Distortion Measure

Gersho’s bounds on the asymptotic performance of vector quantizers are valid for vector distortions which are powers of the Euclidean norm. Yamada, Tazaki and Gray generalized the results to distortion measures that are increasing functions of the norm of their argument. In both cases, the distortion is uniquely determined by the vector quantization error, i.e., the Euclidean difference between...

Asymptotic optimality of scalar Gersho quantizers

In his famous paper [7] Gersho stressed that the codecells of optimal quantizers asymptotically make an equal contribution to the distortion of the quantizer. Motivated by this fact, we investigate in this paper quantizers in the scalar case, where each codecell contributes with exactly the same portion to the quantization error. We show that such quantizers of Gersho type or Gersho quantizers ...

Asymptotic Analysis of Binary Gas Mixture Separation by Nanometric Tubular Ceramic Membranes: Cocurrent and Countercurrent Flow Patterns

Analytical gas-permeation models for predicting the separation process across  membranes (exit compositions and area requirement) constitutes an important and necessary step in understanding the overall performance of  membrane modules. But, the exact (numerical) solution methods suffer from the complexity of the solution. Therefore, solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations th...

Multiple Description Lattice Vector Quantization

We consider the problem of designing structured multiple description vector quantizers. We present a general procedure for designing such quantizers based on the algebraic structure of the lattices, and we present detailed results for the hexagonal lattice: algorithms, asymptotic performance, and numerical simulations. A salient property of the proposed construction is that the second moment of...
